She’s most comfortable, though, playing inner strife for something looser. Kesha presents her audience as a brood of misfits and outcasts - though not quite as large as Lady Gaga’s following - but here it’s clear she feels for them underneath their emulatory makeup. In a gut-wrenching scene, a young male fan breaks down in her arms after telling her how she has helped him cope with being bullied. “Mac Miller” is little more than an extension of that rapper’s album persona, but there is some rewriting of Kesha’s story here.

This year MTV2 broadcast the goofy and sluggish “ Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family,” a series of low-key, contrived misadventures dependent on your belief in Mr. This series is part of an emergent MTV strategy to restore music - or at least musicians - to its programming by giving them short-run series that effectively serve as advertorial. In one scene she’s making out with a man who is never identified in another she’s yammering about hoping to find a plaything in Scotland: “I want to fondle him under his kilt.” She’s a rarity: a sexually actualized female pop star, happy to be on camera as someone with actual desire. The troughs are low.īut she sparkles too. LYRICS:Crazy Beautiful Life It might seem strange to you my friendBut some things are always heaven sentThe more you want the harder it getsThe more you l. One of the most unexpectedly sad moments is a brief scene in which an assistant stoically slaps palmfuls of glitter onto Kesha’s thighs to prepare her for a day of battle. After a concert, clad in a towel, she drinks wine from a bottle as she talks about how the gossip blogger and TV personality Perez Hilton used to torture her. She returns to Los Angeles and has her friends drive her past the home of an ex-boyfriend, Harold, about whom she has written songs.

But jarringly, what begins as an amiable record of a woman in the full flush of success soon takes sharp, seemingly arbitrary turns for the vulnerable. The directionless but well-shot archival footage dates to 2011, when Kesha led her first headlining tour, and was filmed by her brother Lagan, among others, which explains the access, the duration of filming and the intimacy.Īnd also the lack of tension, at least at the beginning - one full minute of the premiere episode documents her puzzling over a concert review of that tour in The New York Times. That entropic Kesha shows up on “Kesha: My Crazy Beautiful Life,” a six-part documentary series that begins Tuesday night on MTV, largely in the form of a fun-chasing woman on the road. She can sing and rap and do plenty of other things well, but she’d rather hide behind a lecherous sneer and a snotty attitude, projecting a sense that things might fall apart at any moment, just as they should. Of today’s pop stars, Kesha is the most irregular, the most collaged - it can seem as if she were made from factory-overrun parts.
